Understanding Your Visit: From Arrival to Follow-Up
A Step-by-Step Guide

What to expect on your visit

1. What to Bring
  • Identification document
  • Medical Aid card (or copy)
  • Main Member's ID
  • Relevant medical documents (health passport, referral letter, previous medical test results) - optional
2. Upon arrival.
  • Confirm your appointment
  • Fill in the registration form (for the initial visit)
  • Complete the declaration form
  • Confirm your consultation fee (outstanding payments)
3. Patient flow
  • Take your file to the nurse for initial assessment
  • Bring the file to the doctor for consultation
  • Your support system/partner is allowed in the consultation room
4. Doctors consultation involves
  • History taking (series of questions to ascertain your condition)
  • Examination may involve general physical, abdominal, and gynaecological (pelvic) examination
  • Pap smear (where applicable)
  • Ultrasound (where applicable)
  • Discussion of findings and results
  • Plan of management
  • Further tests/investigations
5. After Doctor’s consultation at the reception
  • Confirm your co-payment
  • Confirm your next appointment
  • Where further tests/investigations are required:
    • Confirm where the radiology department is
    • Confirm which laboratory
6. In Hospital services
  • Admission:
    • You need medical aid, a copy of ID, doctor’s admission notes/prescription, and a request for authorization for the medical aid.
    • The hospital receptionist will facilitate the admission.
  • Deliveries:
    • Bring your ID, a copy of medical aid, and your antenatal card.
    • Bring along the materials listed in the hospital bag.
  • Operation:
    • Please arrive at the hospital reception by 6:00 AM on the date of the operation.
    • Make sure you do not eat or drink 6 hours before the time of the operation.
    • Confirm on admission the operation you are coming in for.
    • The hospital provides anaesthetic service for a painless and safe operation.
    • Hospital follow-up will be done by the doctor until you are discharged.
    • A follow-up date will be provided to see the doctor at the practice.
7. Payments structure
  • The Practice charges according to NAMAF rates:
    • Confirm on arrival all payments
    • 5% co-payment for PSEMAS Medical Aid
    • Cash clients: confirm your minimum initial fee
    • Settle outstanding payments
  • In-Hospital Admission/Procedure:
    • They are billed directly to the medical aid after obtaining authorization
    • Hospital fees should be inquired at the hospital reception before admission
  • Please note that we will assist with all relevant information on payments, obtaining authorization from medical aids, and quotations for all other services you may require.
8. Warning Signs
  • Please contact the doctor, your GP, or the emergency unit if you develop any of the following symptoms:
    • Severe vomiting, fever
    • Pain that is increasing in intensity and is not controlled by the prescribed painkillers
    • Persistent vaginal bleeding, which is becoming heavier or smelly vaginal discharge
    • Pus, swelling, or increasing redness around the wounds
    • Pain or burning when passing urine or inability to pass urine
    • Collapse, dizziness, or headache
    • Vaginal bleeding in pregnancy
    • Reduced fetal movements
